I have to admit that we had some concerns about Mason’s possible behavior in school. He likes to goof around and joke most of the time. He constantly has a hint of mischievousness in his eyes, so we weren’t quite sure how long it would take before we heard from the principal. It seems, however, that he is taking school very seriously. A few days into it we were talking. I asked him who he played with at recess. He said, “Mom, I don’t really play with any of the boys. They all get into trouble. They mess around with their nametags, they talk when the teacher is talking. They just goof off.” I said, “ALL the boys? even you?” He looked shocked and said, “no, Mom, not me.” (Turns out he plays with the second grade neighbor, Alaina, most recesses.)
Then we just got this note from his teacher. We are proud! Maybe goof-free didn’t last forever, but you knew it couldn’t. Accountability is a close second!
As you well know, Mason is amazing! Today I wrote him a Shark Smile because on his own he decided that he didn't make a wise choice. A small group of students were "goofing off" in the front of the line. Two of the students I observed and told them to go to the end of the line to practice their lining up skills. We have 4 basic skills we have listed, practiced, etc. for when we line up. I then told the students that were still in the front of the line that they needed to decide whether they personally had made wise choices and decide on their own to go to the "practice area" or just stay where they were in the front of the line. Mason walked to the back of the line after he told me he needed to practice some of the skills. Wow!!!
It was my pleasure to write him a Shark Smile and praise him in front of the class. (The Shark Smile will come home with him next week.) He should be so proud!
